1927 Yankees Catching Squad
First off, thank you to everyone who sent me notes about my Mom's passing, your kind works meant a lot to me.
In place of a new card and story this week, I thought I'd show a small part of a larger project I have been working on lately. For a while I have been toying with the idea of picturing a whole ball club, not in a team picture type of situation but in a long vertical formal, casually standing around. The idea came to me when I was thinking of something to do for an art show sponsored by the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame. I thought about doing a large size full team picture of the 1940 team. Unfortunately I got side-tracked by other work and didn't get a chance to get started on it. When I finally started kicking around the idea again I decided on the famed 1927 New York Yankees.
Now, those of you who know me know that I am the furthest thing from a Yankee fan. However, the 1927 team is interesting for a few reasons, the first being that it is well documented with photographs. This is of note because i want to show every player, trainer and batboy, as well as the owners. I figure there will be something like 25 ballplayers and about 8 non-players in the competed drawing. As you can see from the 3 catchers above, I plan on drawing all the men in casual poses, almost like they were captured warming up before a game in 1927. Being as interested in vintage graphic design and advertising as I am in baseball history, lining all the guys up against a background of outfield wall featuring old colorful advertising was a bonus and will be fun to do.
As I complete more sections of the drawing I will post them, no telling how long it will take, but it should be an interesting project!
Will be awesome to see both players and fields in context. Do Brooklyn '55 next!
